GOLDEN GATE ESTATES — UPDATE: John E. Boot has been upgraded to serious condition as of Thursday afternoon, hospital officials said.
A Collier County teenager was flown to an area hospital in critical condition Wednesday afternoon after crashing an all-terrain vehicle in Golden Gate Estates.
Around 4:15 p.m., John E. Boot, 17, was driving the ATV on the 600 block of 19th Street Northwest, when a dog ran in front of him, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Boot was unable to avoid the dog, causing the ATV to roll over.
Boot was ejected from the ATV, which stopped upon hitting a mailbox. He was not wearing a helmet, according to a crash report.
Boot was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition. A crash report said he faces a charge of improper operation of an ATV on a public roadway.
