WOMEN’S SWIMMING

University of Arkansas senior Chelsea Franklin (Estero/Cypress Lake High) has been named a captain for the 2012-13 Razorbacks’ swimming and diving team. Franklin had a second consecutive All-American season last year as a junior. She placed 10th at the NCAA Championships in the 1,650 freestyle. Franklin and her teammates Courtney Hubbard and Julia Kucherich were named the team’s captains.

“All three of them are great examples of leaders both in and out of the pool. Not only do they get it done during practice and competition, but also in the classroom,” said Arkansas coach Sean Schimmel.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Sisters Katie Russo (Fort Myers/Fort Myers High) and Courtney Russo (Fort Myers/Fort Myers High) finished side-by-side for Liberty University in the 57th annual Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 29 in Notre Dame, Ind. Katie finished 135th; Courtney finished 136th with identical times of 18:51, which was a personal best for Katie. Liberty finished 17th as a team.

Gannon University junior Ali Gunns (Fort Myers/Estero High) finished 16th in the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational on Sept. 29 in Erie, Pa. Gunns placed fourth on her team, which finished runner-up. Her time was 20:03.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Emily Cattanach (Fort Myers/South Fort Myers High) assisted on the overtime winning goal in a 4-3 victory against North Georgia on Sept. 29 In Savannah, Ga. Cattanach, who also had an assist in regulation, leads AASU in assists this season with five. AASU is 6-1-1 overall, 4-0-0 in the Peach Belt Conference and ranked No. 9 in Division II.

Pfeiffer University junior midfielder Sarah Yates (Fort Myers/Cypress Lake High) had two of her team’s seven shots on goal in a 2-0 win against Eckerd on Sept. 29 in Misenheimer, N.C. Yates started and played 85 minutes.

Tampa University freshman defender Jessica Frank (Fort Myers/Estero High) had two of her team’s nine shots on goal in a 3-0 win against Lynn on Sept. 26 in Boca Raton. Frank started and played 88 minutes.

North Central University freshman Karlee Hoover (Estero/Estero High) notched her team-leading fourth assist of the season in a 3-1 loss against Crown College on Sept. 29 in Crown, Minn.

BASEBALL

Hillsborough Community College freshman Ryan Withstandley (Fort Myers/Estero High) started at first base and played the first seven innings of a 14-inning game against Palm Beach State in a fall game on Sept. 28 in Tampa. Withstandley walked and reached on an outfield error and later scored a run. In his final at-bat, Withstandley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

RUGBY

The Life University rugby team, which features Cam Dolan (Estero/Estero High), won the South Independent Rugby Conference collegiate 7s tournament on Sept. 29 in Tallahassee. Life, which won the title match against Arkansas State, advances to the national tournament.

FOOTBALL

Walsh University sophomore wide receiver Darryl Gary (Fort Myers/South Fort Myers High) caught a 40-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter of a 24-13 loss against Ohio Dominican on Sept. 29 in Columbus, Ohio. Gary’s catch came with 1:31 left in the third quarter. Gary finished with two catches for 74 yards and returned one punt for two yards. Walsh fell to 1-4.

West Virginia junior defensive back Brodrick Jenkins (Fort Myers/South Fort Myers High) made two unassisted tackles in a 70-63 win against Baylor on Sept. 29 in Morgantown, W. Va. WVU (4-0) will face Texas on Saturday on Fox at 7 p.m. Jenkins is seventh on the Mountaineers in total tackles with 18.

A seven-yard catch by freshman tight end Luke Smith (Fort Myers/South Fort Myers High) helped keep a Jacksonville State scoring drive alive early in the fourth quarter of JSU’s 31-16 win against Southeast Missouri State on Sept. 29 in Jacksonville, Ala. Smith’s only reception of the game came on a third down and two with Jacksonville State leading 17-16. Jacksonville State is 2-2.

Freshman wide receiver Tyrell Blanks (Fort Myers/South Fort Myers High) scored one of Coastal Carolina’s two touchdowns in a 55-14 loss against Appalachian State on Sept. 29 in Boone, N.C. Blanks had a 20-yard touchdown catch. He finished with two catches for 36 yards and returned a kickoff 24 yards. This was the second straight game Blanks has caught a pass for a touchdown.
