Scott McIntyre/Staff Sandra Delgado, left, a Cuban woman who became a citizen one year ago, gets a congratulatory hug from Cyndi Young after casting her first vote as a United States citizen at the Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office on Monday morning.

Sandra Delgado waited for Monday for a long time.

When it finally arrived, she sat at her desk in the Supervisor of Elections Office, where she works as a customer service representative, watching the clock, her driver license sitting next to her on her desk.

About 10 a.m., Delgado got up, walked across the room to the early voting booth, presented her driver license and received her ballot — her first since becoming an American citizen last year. It also was the first ballot cast at the Supervisor of Elections' Office as early voting opened to Collier voters Monday.

"This is a significant moment for me," she said. "Exercising my right to vote, it's so important, especially because of where I come from."

Delgado, 35, came to the United States six years ago from Cuba. She became a citizen in August 2011.

Cuban elected officials must be members of the Communist Party and are approved by both the Communist Party and the Cuban government, according to Jaime Suchlicki, a professor of international studies at the University of Miami.

"We are able to vote for what we want (in the United States) ... I have been waiting for this day for so long," Delgado said. "And I would encourage all voters to come out and vote."

Marcia Herrera, a customer service representative with the Supervisor of Elections Office, said she knows how Delgado feels. Herrera came to the U.S. from Cuba in 1973.

"She knows the meaning of freedom," Herrera said of Delgado. "It's very exciting. I know how important this is to her."

Delgado has worked for the Supervisor of Elections Office since October as a diplomat — someone who helps get people registered to vote at community events like the county fair or farmers' markets.

"She's a nice young lady. She's very good with outreach. She's motivated. She wants to learn," said Cyndi Young, voter outreach coordinator for the Supervisor of Elections Office. "She helped do mock elections in Golden Gate for some of our outreach events. It's neat to see her do it for real."

About eight minutes after she walked in to vote, Delgado left the voting booth to cheers and applause from her co-workers and congratulations from voters waiting to cast their early ballots.

"I am so proud of her," said Collier County Supervisor of Elections Jennifer Edwards. "I know this is very meaningful for her."

Delgado wouldn't say if there was a particular race she was more interested in, but her smile said it all about her experience.

"I have been waiting for this for so long," she said. "I am very proud to vote. I wanted to be the first to vote. It was very important to me."

Delgado, who graduated this year from Edison State College with degrees in criminal justice and crime scene technician, said she hopes to cast the first ballot in the November general election, too.

Eligible voters in Collier County can begin casting their votes today at any of the county’s seven early voting sites.

Those sites are:

■ Everglades City Hall, 102 Copeland Ave. N.;

■ Naples City Hall, 735 8th St. S.;

■ Supervisor of Elections Office, 3295 U.S. 41 E.;

■ Golden Gate Library, 2432 Lucerne Road;

■ Immokalee Library, 417 N. First St.;

■ Library Headquarters, 2385 Orange Blossom Drive;

■ Marco Island Library, 210 S. Heathwood Drive.

Early voting is offered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Early voting ends in Collier on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Congratulations Ms. Delgado however you will learn that voting is not particularly orgasmic. Come November we have the choice of Senator Nelson, who votes typically for government forced redistribution of wealth or Mr. Mack-Bono who seems clueless and lives in California. Be prepared to endure some serious angst while polling. Bless you regardless, hope you don't start missing Fidel.

Glad to see Ms. Delgado improve herself and prepare for U.S. citizenship.

She did that, she worked hard, she earned those degrees and is smarter for it. Like the business owner, she built herself up, took advantage of the opportunities available to everyone, and doesn't owe her success to someone else.

Congratulations!

A new "American" citizen? Not by a long shot. She's Cuban, she'll ALWAYS be Cuban. Citizen yes, AMERICAN, NO WAY. BTW, how does a NON-CITIZEN land a job at the Board of Elections? Shouldn't that job go to someone who has an investment in keeping our elections trustworthy? I'm sure she knows that all one has to do is to lie when registering to be able to vote in this country, legal or not.

....and that kind of arrogance and superiority epitomizes their sense of entitlement gained from the generosity, sweat and hard work of real Americans - who are the ones who made it all possible to begin with.

I don't think I've EVER heard a Cuban (or latino for that matter) THANK any middle class American for helping THEM to prosper in this country, even though it's OUR culture that made it all possible.

Maybe if they were grateful for what AMERICAN culture ALLOWED them, Americans might not be so resentful of the kind of unmitigated gall most latinos exhibit towards the U.S. and it's citizens.

Okay, you're not OKAY. Let me explain something to you. I can see your racism and your arrogance towards Hispanics on your comment, you're a typical Naples Republican. I'm a natural born citizen and Cuban by injection, I mean, married to a Cuban. There's good and bad people in all nationalities. It is a fact that 95% of Cubans get to this country and work hard, open businesses and contribute to this country. When you see people working on our landscaping, streets, farming, etc... What "kind" of people do you see? Natural born Americans? I don't think so. Why? Do your homework and find out. Just look on Naples News and see for yourself what percent of arrests EVERYDAY are Latinos and you'd be surprised. Cubans love freedom and are grateful to this country, have been migrating before Castro and are a great asset to this country. Mel Martinez, former U.S Senator of Florida is Cuban; Bob Menendez,U.S. Senator of New Jersey is Cuban; Marco Rubio, U.S. Senator of Florida is Cuban; Otto Rich and Carlos Gutierrez are members of the National Security Council (NSC), that's only to mention a few. turn off fox or whatever hate station you listen to on the radio.

don't be afraid of hispanics (latinos). they won't hurt you. and they won't dominate.

there are too many other cultures living, thriving, getting educated and appreciating a good education, and contributing to world business by being bilingual in this country.

Moron, I don't LIVE in SW FL any longer. It's called white flight. When a community is invaded by latinos everyone knows what comes next. AMERICAN culture is despised, and latino culture is portrayed as "superior". Refusal to learn OUR language, bigotry against black and white Americans, and the slow degradation of the AMERICAN way of life is what "comes next". I've SEEN it with my own eyes all over the State. But to REALLY understand latino domination, you have to look at what they've done to the State of California. Don't feel sorry for me, feel sorry for yourself that you live in the state - the state of denial.

EVERYTHING a Cuban in the U.S. has, he OWES to Americans. If not for OUR generosity, Cubans would be living in CUBA still. BTW, There is no such thing as a Cuban American.
