NAPLES Planned Parenthood of Collier County will have volunteers handing out free condoms on Friday in the parking lot of two Publix stores in protest of the Publix at Ave Maria deciding not to carry condoms.
"We’re having our condom brigade handing out condoms to meet the public’s need to engage in safe sex and to prevent pregancy," said Char Wendel, chief executive officer of the Planned Parenthood.
The volunteers will be in the parking lots at the Publix in the Naples Shopping Plaza on U.S. 41 across from Coastland Center mall, and the Publix at Pine Ridge Crossing Center at Airport-Pulling and Pine Ridge roads. The volunteers will be handing out the condoms from 10 a.m. until noon.
Wendel couldn’t estimate of how many free condoms will be handed out, but 74,000 condoms are given out for free each year at Planned Parenthood’s front counter at 1425 Creech Road.
Wendel said she is not aware of any other Publix store not selling condoms to the public until the new Publix at Ave Maria opened at Ave Maria on Thursday.

While I do not completely agree with the decision by Publix not to sell condoms at the new Ave Maria store as it amounts to caving into pressure in my opinion, it is still their decision to make as a private enterprise.
I do not understand why Planned Parenthood feels the need to conduct this "protest" at two other Publix stores. What do they hope to accomplish with this? If they really think that have to protest this decision then go out to the Ave Maria store or better yet make their unhappiness known to the Publix corporate offices.
I have nothing against Planned Parenthood at all but they seem to be going about this in a very strange manner.

The Publix I used to work at did sell condoms but you had to ask for them at the counter and I read that the publix in Ave Maria will supply you with condoms if you ask for them. It's like a special order for customers I don't see what the big deal is.Who buys condoms at Publix? Not many people do...

Naples Daily News has fallen so far from real journalism that even by today's journalistic ethics they are totally substandard. There was never any story here; NDN created one, and now, consequently, there IS a story. Well done, for conjuring up news out of wholecloth.
Why do I say there was no story in the first place? First, as reporter Liam Dillon's own story affirms, no Publix as small as the one at Ave Maria carries condoms. Second, the Publix maintains it was not pressured by anyone to decide whether it would carry condoms, nor was it even mentioned to them. Now, by virtue of the fact that none of its other small prototype stores carry this item, Publix' statement seems perfectly consistent. Yet, Mr. Dillon seemed bent on taking a non-story and somehow turning it into a story. Well, he did - now Planned Parenthood is protesting by handing out condoms at Publixes that already sell condoms.
Here's how real journalism works - when there actually is a story, THEN you report it. To wit, if the ACLU had decided ON ITS OWN to inquire about condoms - or if people were complaining because they couldn't get condoms - or if Publix was saying, "Gee, they won't even let us sell condoms in our store" - THAT is a story. THEN you report it. What's so hard to understand about this?

Planned Parenthood plus Catholic-hating liberals... it always makes for toxic blogging here and more than a few laughs.
If the courageous Planned Parenthood brigade wants to hand out free condoms at Publix, why not muster the courage to do it at the Ave Maria Publix? Hmmmm? They won't because they are immature cowards who place symbolism far above substance. There's an abundance of places to buy condomns in Collier County. Why should ONE store who decides not to sell them, cause a leftist meltdown?
Will Planned Parenthood soon demand that ALL merchants carry condoms from here on? If consistency was any concern of theirs, they would.
Shrill voices of the left, disguised as condom distributors who are long overdue for a shower and haircut, will trespass tomorrow at two shopping centers in Naples to make an absurd, convoluted point. It's high time these people were shoved back, and asked to return from under the rock from wence they came.

Some funny comments. Very nice store, some very beautiful college girls buzzing around. Publix agreed to Ava Maria "rules", so what is the big deal here?
I must comment though, everyone was nice, very cordial, and it was kewel to see the old and young communicating on the same level. I saw an old woman walk over to a group of young teens and start conversing, apparently she knew the teen and was not afriad to go over and chat. When was the last time you saw that? Very nice comradery!

'Why do people care that there are no condoms?'
Because they don't want your self imposed societal guilt trip after becoming pregnant and forced to decide if an ABORTION is the moral thing to do.
If you don't like abortions, you call them killings, then you should be at least responsible in discouraging pregnancy.
Abstinence doesn't work in any of your Catholic countries. Just look at your shining example called Ireland. Drunks, poets and pregnant teens.

If you are such a great Catholic, why aren't you moving to Ave Maria yourself? Then the rest of us won't have to fear running into you anywhere in public again.

They persecuted the Jewish people because they knew the Messiah would come from them and they persecute the Catholics today (who are a continuation of the same people, remember Christ was a Jew) because the Messiah (Christ) is present to them in His Body and Blood on the altar. The same altar where the Jewish people used to sacrifice the lamb. So why wouldn't people continue to say today what they did 2000 years ago "crucify Him". That was not the Jewish people who did it but the crowds incited by a hatred toward Christ.

An oasis in the midst of alligators and rattlesnakes! Adam Reilly reported in the Boston Phoenix in June 2005 on a speech given by Mr. Monaghan in Boston at that time:
Ave Maria won't be just a university. It will also be a new town, built from scratch, in which the wickedness of the world will be kept at bay. "We've already had about 3500 people inquire on our Web site about buying a home there - you know, they're all Catholic," Monaghan says excitedly. "We're going to control all the commercial real estate, so there's not going to be any pornography sold in this town. We're controlling the cable system. The pharmacies are not going to be able to sell condoms or dispense contraceptives." A private chapel will be located within walking distance of each home. At the stunning church in the center of town, Mass will be said hourly, seven days a week, from 6 a.m. on. "So," Monaghan concludes, with just a hint of understatement, "it'll be a unique town." As he exits the stage, the applause is thunderous.
So the NDN focus in this article is not inappropriate. In fact it gets to a core concern in the United States after the 43rd President's reign, during which many of our constitutional principles were violated. Certainly Ave Maria has enjoyed a great deal of free emphasis in the NDN.
I happened to visit the place yesterday with my recently graduated-from-high school son. I wanted him to see the university favorably. However, an old-fashioned student hall-monitor was ensconced inside the entrance to the church. I had removed my hat, and we lowered our voices to whispers after opening the main door. The monitor accosted us and asked us not to enter the church as Communion was occurring just then. Wait 5 minutes, we were ordered.
My plan was thwarted. My son refused to wait and so the visit was foreshortened. He had heard what he considers negative things about Ave Maria and Opus Dei already and the monitor's imperiousness was the last straw. He even refused my offer to buy him what I said was a very unusually delicious "wrap" at one of the convenient eateries across the street.
Sometimes you have to let your children decide things for themselves. Mine have apparently chosen the path of embracing the wickedness of the world. It's their right as American citizens to make that choice--as it is apparently within the rights of a resident a little farther east on Oil Well Road to put up a hand-printed entrance sign on his driveway threatening trespassers (who can read) with a shotgun. Quaint.

When are we going to make progress in this country and stop fighting over the dumb issues like birth control and start paying attention to larger societal issues that impact us in a more important way?

This is the most solemn part of the mass. 5 minutes is not to much to wait. We cannot tolerate any of the Catholic traditions but instead want to find fault. If this was a Muslim, Jewish, or ANY other religious tradition we would be respectful and not walk away angry. 5 minutes that's all it would take. Maybe you should have insisted your son at least take that long to learn.
artdude writes:
Ave Maria seems to be placing their head in the sand. Sex education and birth control are good methods for avoiding unwanted pregnancies which would decrease abortions.
It is now evident that abstinence is not an effective method of preventing teen pregnancies. So of course Ave Maria, which is actually part of the United States and not situated within the Vatican whether they wish to be or not has decided they would rather risk more abortions than allow sex education.

Do any of you who are supporting the Catholic religion (of which I was once a member, but am now seriously lapsed) know the harm that the organized Catholic religion has caused over the centuries to its members (and non-members) as well? Recently, in Ireland, there was a very serious outcry over abuses (both sexual and physical) that occurred the past 60 years or so, within the Catholic dioceses in Ireland, by both priests and nuns who had children under their care, and these children, who survived to tell about it, and speaking about it now, they are in their 60's and 70's and are revealing horrific stories of their abuse at the hands of the Catholic priests and nuns. They still have nightmares about their abuse. It has caused a very serious schism in the Catholic religion in Ireland. Unfortunate, but its a fact. Catholicism is not all that it pretends to be.
iryshqueen writes:
Catholicism is all that it should be, obviously it is people who fall and sin. That is why Jesus came. It is Satan who wishes to destroy all that is good. There are many good priests and nuns out there but they are over looked because of a few. Come back to the Church, give it another chance and try to find the good that it is there. Visit Ave Maria and sit in the back of the church during a mass. Come for the consecration (so you don't have to wait for 5 minutes)
